With 2012 behind us, 2013 is here and with it comes many more questions that need to be answered in WWE and predictions to be made. We’re going to get to the bottom of it all right here. Topics include: The Rock, Rising Stars, Wrestlemania, PG, and more!
How will The Rock factor into WWE leading up to Wrestlemania and when will his next appearance afterwards be?
The Rock looks to be a very prominent figure in WWE storylines leading up to Wrestlemania. The popular opinion is that The Rock will win the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble and go on to defend it at Wrestleamania and possibly Elimination Chamber. I’m one of the people who believes that for very logical reasons. If you put the belt on The Rock, you’re guaranteed to get some mainstream publicity and having him carry the title for 3 months can probably get more exposure for WWE than John Cena has given it in 10 years. The Rock is a star unlike any other and people pay to see him and will pay even more attention when if he’s the champion. I don’t agree with the fact that he probably wouldn’t be on house shows which is a let down for the fans that go to those shows but, it’s a short time period and a small price to pay to put WWE back in the spotlight. As for after Wrestlemania, I don’t see Rock factoring in much until the end of the year, or early next year. The Rock will be a valuable piece in the short term for WWE but, the long term is where the struggle lies.
Who will rise to the top in 2013?
There are many welcome candidates to go straight to the top in 2013 and it starts with Cody Rhodes. Cody has been around for a good amount of time and there isn’t a soul who is as good all-around as Cody that hasn’t been given an opportunity to go to the top. Dolph Ziggler is obviously another choice, I really think AJ will enhance his cocky, arrogant character more but, I’m not full convinced it isn’t a rouse. The Shield are obviously a breakout group that could really take control of things in 2013. I really could see The Shield becoming more like the nWo and adopting new members here and there to help the “cause”. Wade Barrett is ready for the main event but, they may take their time pushing him up there. Still, by the end of 2013, I see Barrett as a World Champion. On the Divas side, Natalya could easily have a breakout year if she’s allowed to fully realize her potential, if she sticks with Khali, that probably won’t happen. If not, look to Tamina as someone who could turn some heads. Regardless of who on the Divas roster breaks out, there’s still the question of how much the girls will be allowed to do.
Will this year’s Wrestlemania be able to live up to the high standards of the last few shows?
It can be said that the last few Wrestlemanias have been somewhat lackluster but, I really do have to disagree. Wrestlemania will never be as big as it was in the late 90s and early 2000s but, the matches that have been put together in the last few years have been nothing short of blockbusters. From Undertaker vs. HBK, to Taker vs. HHH to Rock vs. Cena to some very good undercard matches, Wrestlemania has definitely had its share of great moments. This Wrestlemania is shaping up to be a very star-studded affair with the likely top matches featuring Lesnar, HHH, Cena, HBK, Undertaker, and CM Punk. There’s still some questions to be answered about how good the undercard will be but, with all the good young talent coming in this could very well be one of the best Wrestlemanias in recent memory.
How can WWE bring in more fans to bring the ratings back up after nose-diving into 2s?
WWE can help themselves a lot if they allow their characters to develop their own persona and be themselves. All of these scripted promos do not allow a Superstar to connect with the crowd. Austin, HHH, The Rock, Kane, The Undertaker, and Kurt Angle all made their characters work because that’s who they are or thay really could throw themselves behind the type of character they wanted to portray. The next step would be to go back to TV-14. Being PG, WWE is banned from doing A LOT. No realistic violence, storylines can’t be too intricate, everything is dumbed down for the kids. Adults are what made the industry what it was for so many years and adults should be what the product is geared to.
Can themed PPVs possibly continue on at this rate?
I hate themed PPVs. They make absolutely no sense. WWE already has very few surprises left, why ruin what matches are going to be had when by having ppvs like Hell in a Cell, Elimination Chamber, and TLC. I remember when TLC matches were amazing, now, they’re seen a lot more frequently and the iconic nature of the match has been destroyed, it’s the same with the Chamber and the Cell. Bring back King of the Ring, Fully Loaded, and Backlash. All those ppvs would be a breath of fresh air to a terrible ppv lineup. Outside the big 4, nobody wants to buy ppvs and even with the big 4, the only one I ever buy is Wrestlemania, $60 a year is enough and I’m sure a lot of people wouldn’t even pay that. Could you imagine how many people might actually buy a ppv if it’s $10? Everyone would and they’d get far more money with 800,000 people buying it at $10 a pop and telling all of their friends than at $60 which is only affordable to the most hardcore wrestling fan.
My predictions for this year:
- Triple H will battle Brock Lesnar once again, this time at Wrestlemania and will win.
- Dolph Ziggler will win the World Heavyweight Title in the next 2 months.
- Undertaker will remain undefeated and I have the sneaking suspicion it may be against either John Cena or CM Punk.
- Rey Mysterio will retire by year’s end.
- The Shield will become a big entity before going on to single’s careers by the end of Summer
- AJ will kiss someone new.
- The Rock will win the WWE Championship.
- Vince McMahon will be back the moment ratings dip.
- WWE will start to tone back the PG elements of their show after realizing that the show is in a downward spiral.
- A new GM will be crowned after Wrestlemania for Raw.
- Brodus Clay/Fandango will be repackaged or released.
- The Divas will continue to be given tiny roles with the exception of AJ.
What do you think will happen in 2013?
