Sony didn’t show off the console itself but, they sure gave everyone as much information as they could handle!

The system itself looks to break down the hurdles that developers had in the early days of the PlayStation 3 by creating it more like a PC. The PlayStation 4 features an 8-core cpu with x86 architecture with a highly-enhanced PC GPU and 8GB GDDR5 memory capable of producing more than one-million movable objects as shown in a live-demo during the press conference.  It will also be able to create models with more than 30,000 polygons as shown by David Cage of Beyond developer, Quantic Dream.

The DualShock 4 was confirmed for release with the console and is indeed the same controller that we saw leaked in pictures last week. As speculated, the controller does feature a share button which will share the previous 15 minutes of gameplay. There’s a large light bar on the top/back of the controller to indicate the player. There is a touchpad on the front while the ‘options’ button replaces the  standard ‘start’ and ‘select’ buttons are on the right of the touchpad near the top of the controller. The other notable addition was that of a headphone jack in the controller much like that of the Xbox 360.

Other new features include the ability to suspend a play session at the press of a button, this works like the sleep mode of a computer and I can see it easily catching on with busy gamers.  It also has a secondary chip to manage uploads and downloads, even with the main power off which is a nice plus. Downloadable titles on PlayStation 4 will be playable while its download is in progress instead of having to wait for the entire download.  Gamers can also seamlessly upload gameplay video to the internet via the PS4’s one-touch sharing feature as previously noted. It can also provide a spectating experience by live-steaming gameplay and can even provide real-time assistance (like remote assistance in Windows) in return. The system is based around personalized experiences and the system will eventually learn your likes and dislikes in an effort to push content you enjoy to you while hiding the things that you don’t enjoy.

Gaikai was another focal point of the presentation outlining the plans that it has for PS4 and PlayStation services. Players will actually be able to stream demos for games right from the PlayStation Store. David Perry from Gaikai also stated that, while these plans are ambitious, that one of the goals is to be able to stream titles from PS1, PS2, and PS3 across whatever platform you have in front of you. He did stress that while Gaikai has big plans with PlayStation, it’s too early to tell whether or not certain aspects will come to fruition.

Here’s a list of titles revealed for PlayStation 4:

  • Knack, from Japan Studio, a quirky game with a small robot that can seemingly change sizes by gaining different parts.
  • Diablo III – Blizzard’s massively popular PC game is coming to PS4 with 4-player co-op
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall, a first-person shooter from Guerilla Games that takes place in the future, lots of explosions and classic KZ gameplay.
  • Driveclub, an MMO racing game from Evolution Studios.
  • iNFamous Second Son, a game from Sucker Punch that features an underground of superhumans. Nuff ‘said.
  • The Witness, an open-world puzzle-based game from Braid developer Jonathan Blow.
  • Beyond, the previously-announced title from Quantic Dream.
  • Deep Dawn, a new title running from Capcom designed specifically for PlayStation 4.
  • Final Fantasy – a new title to be made on Square-Enix’s Luminous Engine which will be revealed at E3 in June.
  • Watch Dogs, an open world action-adventure game from Ubisoft.
  • Destiny, a recently-announced MMOFPS from Bungie.  This game will be available as both a PS3 and PS4 title.

PlayStation 4 will be out this holiday season, pricing has yet to be announced.
