In the first significant deal of the deadline day, the Canadiens have acquired some help on the back-end.

The Edmonton Oilers have traded defenceman Jeff Petry to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a second- and conditional fifth-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. The conditional fifth-round draft pick could wind up being as high as a third-rounder, depending on the Canadiens’ playoff performance. If the Canadiens win one round, the pick becomes a fourth-rounder. If they make the Eastern Conference Final, the pick becomes a third-rounder.

Petry has four goals and 11 assists in 59 games this season with the Oilers.
