The 3/28/2017 SmackDown Rebound features our thoughts on AJ vs. Shane McMahon, the SmackDown Women’s Division, and much more!
AJ Is Untouchable
I’ll admit, AJ vs. Shane McMahon at WrestleMania probably wouldn’t be my first choice for the match that II’d like to see AJ compete in at WrestleMania. I feel like there could have been so many better options and yet here we are. The thing that annoyed me about their contract signing is that Shane praised AJ for the most part before calling him arrogant. This isn’t something that someone who got their head put through a window would be doing. Shane should be pissed and yet, he’s completely level-headed. It was kind of off-putting in all honesty. I really thought Shane would come out with some fire, but I was completely disappointed.
AJ Styles said pretty much what I expected him to say. He said he was untouchable in that ring and the best all-around performer WWE has ever seen. While that may be an arguable point to some, there’s a lot of validity in that statement. I think the best way of going about this would be to have a match where AJ beats Shane up for the most part before Shane gets a couple high spots in and then loses from a Phenomenal Forearm or something. AJ should look strong here, there would be absolutely no reason for Shane to win this match. That’s the problem, though. It’s way too predictable. There’s no real suspense in a match like this, even for a casual fan. I expect more from WrestleMania.
The SmackDown Women Preview WrestleMania
Beck Lynch and Carmella were having a matach on SmackDown when Mickie James and Alexa Bliss decided to start fighting as they were on commentary. This led to a tag team match between Carmella and Alexa and Mickie and Becky. Carmella would get the cover and this would lead to all the women fighting in addition to Natalya who came down to do commentary. Naomi’s music would hit and she cleaned house standing tall in the ring.
Did we really need to see Naomi on SmackDown? Having her make the appearance before actually going to WrestleMania just gives away what’s going to happen in that match. The Orlando girl has to take home the gold, right? I would think so. Naomi truly deserves that moment and I hope it happens even though the fan in me would like to see Alexa’s reign continue.
I think I’m most interested in who might show up in this match. It is open to any SmackDown contracted performers. Might we see some old faces pop up again? It’s definitely possible and I’m hoping for it. I’m wondering if we could possibly see someone like Asuka pop up. That’s probably a long shot, but I’m excited to see what happens.
Cena and Nikki Get The Last Word
The thing I love about the John Cena/Nikki Bella vs. The Miz/Maryse is how there is that real life animosity between the two couples. I think this feud makes so much sense because of that. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but these 4 people really seem to hate each other and have been taking some very personal jabs at each other. I’ll be interested to see how this one plays out at WrestleMania. I’m sure Cena and Nikki are winning, but I think it could be one of the better matches on the card. I just hope Maryse doesn’t have a lot of ring rust.
Orton Drives a Stake Through Abigail
Bray Wyatt defeated Luke Harper on SmackDown, but that wasn’t the story at all. The real story was Randy Orton going back to the Wyatt compound that he burnt down to drive a stake through the ashes of Sister Abigail. I really don’t know what’s going to happen between these two but this is the best story that WWE has going right now. It’s been about 6 months and while I was souring on it for a few weeks, I’m invested again now. There’s just so much substance there. Could we see Sister Abigail in the flesh at long last? I think that would be an interesting turn of events and a good way for Bray to regain his “power” In any event, I hope that this match closes WrestleMania. This deserves to be the main event for the work that these men have put in and it’s the match that’s most up in the air right now. It should be the main event.
There was a 10-man tag match. I’m not really sure why that one was going on especially considering that there is no SmackDown Tag Team Championship match at WrestleMania. This is ridiculous and needs to be rectified immediately. Two of the best tag teams in WWE in The Usos and American Alpha aren’t even on the card! That’s unacceptable. I don’t care how many matches are already on the card, those two teams deserve to be there.
Baron Corbin and Dean Ambrose traded more verbal jabs on Talking Smack. We’ll see how that one goes, I’m not sure how I feel about it at this point. It just seems forced.
