The 4/11/2017 SmackDown Rebound features my thoughts on the brand new Superstars coming over to SmackDown from Monday Night Raw!

The Kevin Owens Show Comes to SmackDown Live

Kevin Owens showed up on SmackDown and started talking about it being the new Kevin Owen Show. He then went on to rant about being the new face of America as the United States Champion. Baron Corbin would interrupt and staked his claim in the US title picture. Then Sami Zayn would come out to announce that he is now part of SmackDown Live. AJ Styles came out afterward to tell everyone that he was still on the blue brand. It was a pretty quick whirlwind of guys coming out.

Daniel Bryan came out to clear things up and stated that whoever wins the Payback match for the US title will be on the SmackDown brand. At least we know that SmackDown is keeping one of the secondary titles, I was afraid that they wouldn’t. He also set up Styles vs. Corbin vs. Zayn for the #1 Contender for the US title after Payback. Isn’t it a little early to set up who that will be? Payback is still weeks away, what will they do until then?

I like the idea of putting Styles in the US title hunt, it gives him something meaningful to do while staying out of the WWE title picture. I feel a lot better about Zayn joining SmackDown as well. It’s obvious that he’ll be given more of an opportunity on this brand than on Raw. As for Corbin, he picks up where he left off and should be a good bet to win the US title in the coming months. For right now, AJ won the triple threat match and will face Owens. I’m not sure how I feel about that one yet.

Rowan Makes His Mark

Erick Rowan had a quick match with Randy Orton on SmackDown. Bray Wyatt would show up on the Tron to get in the head of Randy Orton. This would work as Orton would be hit with the steel steps and laid out in the middle of the ring. It was an alright segment but felt kind of pointless in reality. Wyatt plays mind games, you’d think the other Superstars would smarten up to that after a while.

The Usos Reign Supreme

American Alpha invoked their rematch clause on SmackDown for the SD Tag Team Championships. The two teams had a good match for the time given. I would love to see them actually have a match on a PPV with some more time. The Usos ended up with the victory and ended the rather short and uneventful feud between these two teams. I was really disappointed with the feud we got out of these teams. They should have had a match at WrestleMania, I believe it would have been one of the best matches on the card and yet they weren’t on it.

The Shining Stars showed up and took out Chad Gable after the match. It looks like they’ll replace Slater and Rhyno in the tag team division. I hope we see a more serious side of those two guys. They’ve been under-utilized for years and they definitely deserve a chance to be a legitimate championship caliber team. It was a nice choice for them go to SmackDown.

Gronk Gets His Revenge

Mojo Rawley beat new SmackDown star, Jinder Mahal after Rob Gronkowski threw a beer on Mahal. It was a good way to close the quick story between these three and I don’t think we need to revisit this one again. I thought this was a quick cash in on Gronk and nothing more.

Shane McMahon Announces Two New Female Members of SmackDown

Tamina and Charlotte Flair were announced as the two new stars coming to the SmackDown Women’s Division. It was really nice to see Tamina finally making her way back to the roster. It feels like she’s been gone a long time. It makes a lot of sense for her to be on SmackDown and Nia on Raw since both women are similar stars. I would love to see Tamina get into the title picture. I think her problem will be connecting with the fans as she hasn’t had many promos over the years. If she sticks to being a heel, she probably won’t need to do much talking.

What can you say about Charlotte Flair? She is the biggest star in either brand’s Women’s Division. Charlotte did everything she could possibly do on Raw and as I said in my other article, she needed a change. There are many fresh faces for Charlotte to feud with on SmackDown and I feel like Becky Lynch would be a natural first opponent for her. Unfortunately, we didn’t get much information as to what will happen in the Women’s Division on SD so we’ll have to wait until next week.

Aiden English Meets The Perfect 10

Aiden English has reverted to his singles character from NXT and I’m already not feeling it. I really don’t think it’s going to go anywhere for him. I like that it’s a little bit different, but I see it as nothing more than an act to get cheap heat. As for Dillinger, he keeps his momentum going with another victory. I really feel like he’s going to be at the very least a mid-card star in the next few months.

Nakamura Interrupts Ziggler Again

Shinsuke Nakamura interrupted Dolph Ziggler again in the ring. Ziggler ended up trying to Superkick him to no avail as Nakamura caught it. Ziggler would then back down. I can see some good matches out of these two in short order. I like that they threw Ziggler in with Nakamura because I don’t think there are many people that can build Nakamura up to the WWE title picture like Ziggler can. I’m looking forward to seeing how well Nakamura transitions to the main roster and if he’ll be used properly. This is a guy who hasn’t lost many matches since coming to WWE.

The New Day, Rusev, and Lana

These Superstars didn’t appear on SmackDown, but I think they’re great acquisitions. The New Day can help the Tag Team Division gain some personality. One of the big problems is that there isn’t enough time for teams to connect with the fans on SmackDown. The New Day can certainly help with that with backstage segments or anything else. They excel in an area of weakness on SD and they’ll help immesnsely.

As for Rusev and Lana, it’ll be a fresh start. Rusev can reboot himself after being pushed down to the bottom of the card. He had a solid run for quite a while so it’s peculiar to see him fall so much. I think it was a case of not trusting him enough to carry the main title and not needing the secondary title enough to keep it. Lana looks to be joining the Women’s Division if her promo video is of any indication. That could just be to hype her arrival, but there’s no way of knowing with such a pointless promo video. i think she has far more value managing than wrestling, personally.

  • Sami Zayn

The Final Word

We had a lot of introductions of SmackDown, but there wasn’t a whole lot else. The high point was the match between The Usos and American Alpha and the main event. Everything else felt rushed as is the case with most SmackDown shows lately. They need to find a way to fit everything in a more meaningful way.
