The 6/28/2017 WWE NXT Analysis is a short one focusing on the first-ever Last Woman Standing Match in NXT history and Hideo Itami.
Velveteen Dream Gets Another Victory
Velveteen Dream continues to roll with in NXT with a convincing victory over Ho Ho Lun. I’m enjoying seeing how this character is coming along. He’s outlandish, cocky, and flamboyant and it’s working for him. He is doing a good job allowing the fans to get to know who he is as a character. The lengthy matches will come later. He also hits a pretty amazing elbow drop, easily one of the best I’ve ever seen in terms of the height he gets off the top rope. I look forward to seeing what’s in store for him in NXT.
Itami Gets His Nose Busted Open
Hideo Itami and Oney Lorcan attempted to have a rematch from a few weeks ago that lasted all of 10 seconds before Itami had to be shipped off to the back. Lorcan connected with an uppercut to the nose and I’m pretty sure it broke Itami’s nose. He came out a little while later with plugs and the match resumed. I love that these guys fight like it’s a shoot fight, it’s amazing. Lorcan would fall to the GTS once again after hurting his knee which Itami kicked out from under him earlier in the match. Itami is still showing heel tendencies, so I’m not really sure about what direction they want him to go in. I like that they keep me guessing each week.
Itami called out Kassius Ohno after the match to apologize to him, but they were both attacked by Sanity (minus Eric Young). Alexander Wolfe talked about Young being the maestro and creating his master plan and how he can’t wait for it to unfold. Now this is what I want! Sanity has been spinning its tires for a long time now. Finally, they have some direction and an actual tangible storyline. I don’t know what it is yet, but it’s there. That’s all I wanted for these 4. They all have so much potential and this group can be so much more dominant than they’ve been. I’m excited.
Last Woman Standing
Asuka and Nikki Cross went to war over the NXT Women’s Championship on this week’s episode of NXT. It was the first-ever match of this kind in NXT history and they gave the match just shy of 25 minutes which is pretty impressive on an hour show. These two put on a very good match in front of the NXT faithful. I think that Nikki Cross is extremely underrated and that she’s going to be a huge deal in WWE for years to come. Asuka was amazing as always and it’s going to be a sad day when we see her part ways with NXT to go to the main roster (that day has to be coming soon).
The match was filled with weapons including a garbage can, bed of chairs, a ladder, and a table. The end came when Asuka suplexed Nikki beside a table since they kind of missed the mark. Asuka got up at 9, Cross stayed down. Asuka retained as expected. I’m not sure if this feud is over, but I don’t think I want it to be. I still want it to be a Triple Threat Match with Ember Moon at Takeover: Brooklyn III. I think that would make the most sense and those 3 ladies will have an amazing match.
I enjoyed this week’s episode of NXT for the simple fact that it focused on wrestling and putting together a new story. We also learned that Heavy Machinery will face AOP in Brooklyn for the tag titles which was expected. It’ll be interesting to see how that card shapes up over the next few weeks.
