The Calgary Flames made a splash on the second day of the draft as they have acquired defenceman Travis Hamonic from the New York Islanders.
The Flames also acquire a conditional fourth-rounder and send the Islanders a 2018 first-rounder, 2018 second-rounder and another conditional second-rounder in 2019.
A defensive defenceman, Hamonic scored a career-high 33 points in 2014-15. This past season, he scored 14 points in 49 games this season. With an average of 20:27 of ice time per game, he was New York’s third most-used blueliner behind Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk — and the team leaned on him in shorthanded situations, where he averaged a team-high 2:18 per game.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound defenceman is a native of St. Malo, Manitoba. No word yet on the conditions of the 2019 second rounder.
