FYIG recently got to chat with Justine Iaboni aka Stellina about her fascinating transformation from fashion blogger to music artist. Find out what she had to say about the transition inside!
Before we get into your professional life, tell us a little bit about Justine Iaboni the person.
I love being creative and going into my room by myself to just think. I love yoga and meditation. I also love to help people and share my experiences with others. I’m very open.
You became a huge success running your fashion blog Jetset Justine. What prompted you to start that blog?
I was going to Italy with one of my best friends for the summer in 2009. I thought, why don’t we blog about our trip? And that’s how it started. Later I changed the blog to Jetset Justine because I wanted to run it more as a business. I wanted my blog to take me to International travel – which is where the jet-set came from. And it did. I’m so lucky I got to travel the world for work and have some amazing experiences I’ll never forget.
What did it feel like to create something so popular basically from scratch?
Honestly, you don’t even really realize how successful something is until you leave it. When I was in it. It just felt like an uphill battle all the time. There were small moments of like “yay! That was so cool” but it was short-lived. The responsibility of running my own business was completely overwhelming – but it’s my own fault. I let it become so stressful.
What advice would you give to bloggers who are just starting out and trying to make a name for themselves?
If you want to do it for the money, access, swag, opportunities, fame, you’ll never make it. You have to start with heart and stay with heart. Do it as if you were doing it for free. Sure, if you do it for the other reasons you’ll have maybe one year of success, but it will fizzle.
You’ve conquered fashion blogging, now you’re taking on music. That’s a big change! How did you make the decision to become a music artist?
I just listened to my heart. I finally answered the call that had been inside of me my whole life. It feels like the most natural thing in the world.
Tell us about the transformation from Justine to Stellina. Has your approach to this endeavour changed at all from your approach to your blog?
I’m being more true to myself. I’m aligned with my higher Source. I don’t work with anyone unless they are 100% aligned with me and as I move more into my musical journey, I’m beginning to realize that I have to take a step back and hone my sound, my craft, my message, before I involve anyone else. It’s of utmost importance.
What did you learn from blogging that you can apply to your music career?
Apart from like, accounting, contracts, legal stuff, I’ve learned to trust my gut, to work on my schedule and no one else’s, and to never compromise my message for anyone. EVER.
You released your first single Extra Sunny How did it feel to finally have a piece of your music out there for the public to hear?
I thought I was going to feel like I was flying on the moon – instead I spent the day crying and freaking out. I think my ego got involved a little bit that morning of the premiere. It’s like sharing a piece of your soul with the world. Afterwards, I was happy but f*** man, it was hard.
You also released your first mixtape Star Seventeen. What can we expect from these 5 tracks?
Just me experimenting with recording and making music. Luc and I just hung out in my second bedroom for about 3 months, writing, recording, mixing. It’s me just finding my voice again. It’s very vulnerable.
Do you have any particular music artists that you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
Kaytranada. Hands down.
Fashion blogger, music artist, what’s next for you?
Whatever the Universe puts in front of me 🙂
What would you say to those people who are looking to follow their own dreams?
We live in a kind Universe. If you can believe that and act out of kindness, you will be supported. You have to surrender your dreams to the greater good, be detached from the outcome, and help others. That’s the true way the Universe can support your dreams. Like attracts like. If you’re selfish and pessimistic, you’re going to attract selfish people and selfish events that will bring you more pessimism. If you doubt yourself, the Universe will bring you more doubt. You have to just go for it, no matter how hard, stop making excuses. And get in touch with your spirituality. It will help you to achieve your real purpose.
Now that you are a music artist, will you still be maintaining Jetset Justine?
Sadly, it is time to say goodbye.
