FYIG recently had the chance to chat with DJ Kill Them With Colour about his new single and EP Coastal and his collaboration with Kapri on the single Deeper. Find out more right here!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born in France, grew up in Trinidad and then finished high school in Canada. From a young age, I’ve always been passionate about music and creating sounds.

How did you get your start as a DJ?

I would collect dancehall and reggae music and spin parties around Trinidad. Soon after I started producing and got hooked, so I stuck with it and made it my priority.

Talk about the name Kill Them With Colour and how it applies to your music and style.

I’ve always created different genres of music but have infused them with my style, so the term kind of describes sound as if it can be seen in the spectrum of colour and the many colours (sounds) I produce.

You produced Kapri’s single Deeper in 2017 which went #1 on Spotify and earned you a 2018 Juno Award nomination for Dance Recording of the Year. What was it like to receive that type of recognition for your work?

I’m honestly really grateful for the love we both got on this track. I really do this because I enjoy producing music so this was just a nice bonus.

How was it working with Kapri?

It was so much fun! She’s also Trinidadian like me so there was a lot that we connected on upbringing-wise and we had a mutual understanding coming from similar musical backgrounds culturally.

You have a new single out right now called Coastal which features Lilianna Wilde. Tell us a little bit about this track.

“Coastal” is about the in-between feeling you get being in a long distance relationship, geographically and emotionally. Although the miles make it confusing and difficult, when you miss someone that bad, it’s all still worth it.

The Coastal EP will be out July 13th. What can audiences expect from that EP?

It’s a bit of a mix of island-inspired sounds along with sounds of the summer.

What’s next for you beyond the EP?

An album 😉

What advice would you give to aspiring DJs?

Never unplug your USB without ejecting it first.

What do you do when you’re not making music?

Other than painting and making visual art, I organize world music parties around the city under the name “Lost World” in Toronto. It’s all about showcasing music from around the world and dancing!
