Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m Natalie Shay. I’m a 20-year-old indie pop-rock singer-songwriter and guitarist from London. I’ve been doing music full time since I graduated and I spend too much time on my phone.
You have been a classically-trained guitarist from the age of 5. Is it safe to say that music has always been your passion?
Yes and no, when you’re a kid you don’t really realize how important learning the instrument you are learning is until you realize that most people don’t play an instrument. For a long time, it was a battle to get me to practice or to even care about playing the guitar, it wasn’t until I realized that playing the guitar was kinda cool that I took it seriously. this was around the same time I started writing songs and obsessing over Taylor Swift when I was about 11.

What did it mean to you to be accepted into the prestigious BRIT school?

At the time it meant the world to me. most 14-year-olds don’t decide that they’re ready to give up normal education to pursue a mostly vocational education in the industry they want a future in. it was really the recognition I needed to have faith in myself but also gave me that freedom to escape my intense academic school to focus on something I loved that I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
What did you learn in your time there that has helped you as a music artist?
I learned how to work with and respect other creatives. I learned a lot about the industry and without those classes, I’m not sure I’d have been able to do so much on my own. but mainly I learned independence and confidence in myself and my craft from a very young age which has really helped me in music and just in general life.

Your latest single is called “Yesterday”. What can you tell us about this song?

This song is about a one-sided relationship. I liked a guy way more than he liked me (he was a bit of an idiot anyway), I wrote this song at the point that I realized it was a huge waste of time and that actually I deserve so much better.

You’re only 20 years old and you’ve already performed at legendary venues like Royal Albert Hall and The O2. What have those experiences been like?

They’ve been amazing. I enjoy playing live to doing anything else, you get a real kick from a great audience, I love playing live whenever I can.
You have a couple successful singles under your belt in recent months. When can we expect an EP or even an album?
I plan to save an EP and album until I have the right team or backing to record and release one. I’m unsigned, At the moment so doing singles is a great way of focusing attention on each song so nothing gets missed.

You have your first headline show on February 2nd at Thousand Island. What can audiences expect when they see you live?

The full Shay experience. I’ve put so much effort into this show. I’ll be playing all the main songs, full band, cool lights, and surprises. If you wanna see the surprises..come on down!!
What advice would you have for aspiring singers/songwriters?
To stick to what you know and enjoy. Write what you enjoy writing, and play where you enjoy playing. Everyone is different it’s good to be unique.
What’s your life like outside of the studio?
Mainly just consists of emails and over planning everything. However, it’s all very rewarding when something pays off
