This morning’s surprise Nintendo direct, announced yesterday, provided anxious Pokémon fans with new details on Generation 8 and the new region of the Pokémon world. In the seven-minute Direct, Tsunekazu Ishihara, the President and CEO of the Pokémon Company, along with Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori, the Producer and Director of the new series, respectively, introduced the world, new starter Pokémon, and teased even more about the series to come.
Named Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, the new series is set in a new region, the Galar region, seemingly inspired by London and UK landscapes, as other installments in the series have done in the past with other regions. The colorful and rustic settings are something fans really haven’t seen before, and should be a treat to explore.
With new settings comes new Pokémon species to raise, train, and battle to become the newest Pokémon Master. These new Pokémon are the typical types, Grass, Fire, and Water, though their evolutions and future types are a secret for now! Named Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble, these new starters may just be the cutest ones yet. As well as the starters, there are many more new Pokémon to find and train.
Fans will have to wait a bit longer for these games, as they release Late 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. However, Ishihara confirmed that there will be more Pokémon content to come this year with the potential for new games and more. While the announcement is a bit cryptic, we can only hope for more great games to come.
