How did you all meet and decide to form The Shakes?

This project has cycled through a couple of members and I’ve been doing it since I was 16. Cameron and I have been friends for a couple of years now, we met at a Bad Suns show and we’ve been best friends ever since. I met Syd, Tanner, and Levi at SXSW touring with another artist last year. We all clicked really well and I asked them if they wanted to join the project when we got back from tour, and here we are now.

What stands out about this band from others out there right now?

We don’t try to stand out, we just do our thing. I let the music speak for itself. Come to a show and see for yourself.

How would you describe your musical style?

I always get asked this question. And I never really have a solid answer for anyone… Others usually describe it pretty well, cinematic.. However, I always tell people Guitar & B.

What did you learn from the release of your debut EP “With Every Moment” (which held a spot on the NACC charts for 3 weeks in a row)?

People liked it.

You’re releasing your B-side playlist “From The Bedroom”. What can audiences expect from this collection of songs?

“From The Bedroom”, is something that we’ve been working on for months now. We wrote, produced, and mixed everything together, for the first time, from our living room. You can expect some great releases… each one different from the next. Each one is intimate, full of stories to tell. Cinematic..  They’ll be all coming out one by one through the next few months.

Tell us a little bit about the single ‘Underneath A Blood Orange Sky’.

The voicemail at the beginning of the song pretty much inspired the entire playlist. “With Every Moment”, was a collection of songs involved with different experiences in my life, It was me learning to cherish life for what it was. This playlist is filled with songs relating to friendships, family and relationships. “Blood Orange”, is the intro track that took me 6 months to write (lol). I brought it to Syd and she really made the song come to life.

What’s next for The Shakes? Might a full-length album or a tour be in the works?

We’re going on tour for SXSW this week and we’re really excited about it. Also, have a couple of great shows that will be following that.. Will announce sooner than you think. We really love to play live and give the listener an experience to enjoy. A full-length is in the works, but that is a little farther down the line.

What advice would you have for aspiring music artists?

Well, I’m still learning things about the industry. But the best piece of advice I can give is to believe in what you do. If you don’t believe in yourself then who will? I used to compare my music to other artists/bands all the time and I was never satisfied. Comparison is the thief of joy.

What is your life like outside of music?

Boring. I like reading, watching Lost, and hanging out with my friends and my girlfriend. I just finished Stephen King’s “Doctor Sleep” the other week. 10/10 would recommend. 90% of my life is about music, it’s all I think about.. It’s all i want to do.
