Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m just a young girl trying to find herself and maneuver through life and find my way through doing what I love
You were born into a family in media. How did that affect your creativity and desire to be in the entertainment industry?
If anything it was harder to pursue the creative path because my family loves what they do and they are on the business end of media. The creative path is very different from what I was exposed to and I felt this pressure to work on that side of the business like them. After I got out of LA and had a fresh start, I was less afraid to pursue the creative side of the business and was inspired by the city. My family was and is supportive and being around the business my entire life is what sparked my love for music in the first place.
What was it about your move to New York City that helped you flourish as an artist?
With my move to NYC, I experienced losing myself and finding myself all at the same time. I figured out who I was, what my values are, and who I wanted to be as a person which helped me find my artistry. I did a lot of growing up here and because of that NYC will always be a place that is special to me.
How would you describe your musical style?
My musical style is left of center pop with dark lyrics, upbeat melodies, and dance/disco elements. All of my songs are based on true stories.
Your latest single is called, “WTF” and it’s about the internal struggle when you get ghosted. What message are you trying to convey with this song (being based on personal experiences)?
Absolutely based on a true story. The message I’m trying to convey is to laugh it off, trust the process, some things aren’t meant to work out, and if you’re ever sitting there thinking “what did I do wrong” that is just your ego talking, move on. Remember you’re a badass and don’t ever let anyone make your question yourself.
“WTF” comes off the heels of another single, “Have to Forget” which has amassed over 300,000 plays on Spotify. Did you ever expect to see that type of success so quickly?
Absolutely not. I wrote this song so hungover and sad one day after a long weekend. I wrote it to a random beat that someone made for me that was supposed to be for a different song. This song was pure emotion and truth getting poured into a song with zero expectation and it ended up being one of my best songs so far which just goes to show that making real music and not just trying to make a hit is what people want to hear.
Do you have any plans for an EP or full-length album in the near future?
Yes, my debut EP is coming out in June, stay tuned!
What else can listeners expect from you in 2019?
Hopefully some cool remixes, features, and shows. Follow me instagram @leah to keep tabs.
What advice would you have for aspiring singers/songwriters?
Be yourself and be confident in who you are. If I am going to be honest, singing and writing and showing this side of myself is my biggest fear and my biggest passion. For years I sat around too scared to do anything about it. Just go for it! Always be truthful and authentic to you and the listeners come.
What’s your life like outside of music?
I’m extremely active, I love to travel, do weird shit, and meet new people. I love trying new things and adventures.
