Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hi!! I’m Jillian Steele 🙂 I am an artist/songwriter originally from Long Island, New York now living in Nashville!!

You started your career singing and acting in commercials. Was there ever a time where you thought you might get into acting instead of music?

I definitely enjoyed the excitement of being so young and going out on acting auditions in NYC and remember being over the moon when I would get callbacks and book jobs however, I think the older I got the more I realized acting was not the path I wanted to take and that music was really always my first love.

You moved from New York to Nashville to study at Belmont University. Do you think you would have pursued a music career had it not been for the influence of the musical environment around Nashville?

100%. I moved to Nashville to go to school because I was already writing/playing music and sure that I wanted to pursue it.  These past years in Nashville definitely helped me grow as a songwriter and help shape me as an artist and I feel so lucky to be part of the Nashville musical environment.

How would you describe your musical style?

If I have to narrow it down to a genre it would be Indie Pop. I grew up listening to artists that were all pretty acoustic heavy (Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks) and so while my music is pop, there’s definitely still some acoustic elements to the songs that keep them somewhat organic feeling.

Your latest single is called, “No Expectations”. What can you tell us about this song?

No Expectations I wrote in Brooklyn with Michel Heyaca and James Adam Shelley. We wrote the song when I was struggling to decide if I wanted to stay in Nashville or move back to New York and there were a lot of other big decisions to make and “problems” I didn’t feel like I had the power to solve.  I was definitely feeling pretty unsure and not in control of a lot of things happening around me and this song helped to put into words that sometimes you just need to take a step back and let life happen the way it’s supposed to.

Do you have any plans for an EP or full-length album in the near future?

Yessss. I Would love to put out an EP in the near future and it is definitely something I’m working on.

What’s next for your career? What are your goals as an artist?

My goal as an artist right now is just to create more music that is authentic and honest and to continue growing as an artist. I just want to release as many songs as possible 🙂

What advice would you have for aspiring singers/songwriters?

Go all in. If music is really what you want to pursue then it needs to be something you live and breathe and think about and work at constantly. This took a while for me to figure out and once you make pursuing music a lifestyle instead of just a dream then you are really going to make things happen.

What’s your life like outside of music?

Honestly pretty chill. When I’m in Nashville I’m hanging out with my friends a lot and when I’m in New York I’m spending as much time with family as possible. Traveling is my second favorite thing to do after music so I try to travel as much as possible and just always having new experiences.
