Tell us a little bit about yourselves.
I am Josef, half of Amistat 🙂 My twin brother and I were born in Germany and raised in Italy with parents originating from the Czech Republic. We spent the last 8 years we spent in Australia.
How did you get your start in music?
My twin brother Jan started taking guitar lessons at the age of 8 and I eventually started singing along. It was more of a hobby to begin with. When we moved to Australia in 2011 we started the project Amistat and began to write our own songs.
How would you describe your musical style?
I’d say the genre is close to IndieFolk. It’s similar to the sounds of the likings of Ben Howard, Simon and Garfunkel, Mumford and Sons and Kings of Convenience.
Is it easier to make music with your twin? How do you complement each other?
I’d say it’s easier to some extent if you look at the connection side of things and being on the same page. On the other hand, you spend a lot of time traveling and sharing beds and couches which sometimes can be frustrating as you see each other 24/7 and don’t really get a break.
Jan is definitely the more skilled musician that’s why he does most of the composing. I have been singing for a little longer than him so that’s my expertise. I guess we both have different areas that we are better in and others that we can improve more and it always helps as we can learn from each other and push us to the next level.
What can you tell us about your latest single, “Love and Light”?
The words “ Love and Light “ have always been some kind of life motto for us. Coming from a space of comprehension and carefulness not matter what is going on in your personal life and projecting that onto your environment. Jan initially started writing the song about the environment and nature. Over the course of one year, a few other topics influenced the song and made their way into the song.
What can audiences expect from your latest EP, “Nostalgia”?
We put a lot of thought and energy into making the songs sound unique and to keep the sound design interesting. It is a mix of acoustic guitars, pianos and vocal melodies crossed with organic, modern beats and rhythms.
Do you have any live shows coming up? What’s the experience like at one of those shows?
We are currently playing a few shows and festivals around Europe before our headline tour in November/December. It really depends on what type of show it is and what kind of crowd. On average I’d say it’s a pretty relaxed, a listening type of crowd where people can be themselves and are free of concern for a couple of hours.
What advice would you have for aspiring singers/songwriters?
Find your own sound, don’t follow a trend and what works but more so be unique and yourself. Always believe in yourself and the vision you have and know that unless you are clear with who you are and why you do what you do you will never truly be fulfilled.
What are your lives like outside of music?
We love playing all kinds of sports especially golf and soccer. We work out regularly to not only keep the body fit but also the mind. Traveling and spending quality time with close friends is the pinnacle. Growing and becoming better on every level is happiness to us and something we check in with daily.
