Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Cuja. I’m an artist and songwriter living in LA. When I’m not working music, I’m usually reading, doing yoga, eating sushi or hanging with my dog Indiana Bones!
How did you get your start in music?
I’ve been writing songs and performing since I was a kid. I always wanted to be an artist, but it took me a while to start taking myself seriously as a musician and creator. A little over 2 years ago, I moved to LA to give it my shot. That’s also when I discovered my love for music production.
How would you describe your musical style?
My first love has always been pop music, but I have a sweet spot for acoustic singer/songwriter vibes too. Currently, my project is pretty straight pop with a little Rnb flavor. However, my creative life is pretty vast and I’ve found myself doing a little more experimental electronic stuff. That’s the amazing thing about music is it’s very organic–always evolving and changing!
What can you tell us about your latest single, “New B****, Who Dis?”
NBWD is my hot girl summer anthem! I wrote it with Alina Smith and Elli Moore of the production team Lyre. We had a big conversation about people who think they are worth your time and how we should just ghost the negative vibes away. NBWD is that final straw, where you’re finally done putting up with someone’s crap! Its been a super fun ride putting this song out and hearing what the fans have to say! So far, its been really rewarding.
The video that accompanies this song was the first music video you’ve ever done. How was your experience working on the video?
I was so happy to flex a part of my brain I hadn’t in a while. While I’ve never done a music video, I have a degree in acting and have been in the director’s chair before. So it felt really good to imagine the song in a more visual way and to work with my team on creating something really beautiful and powerful.
What’s next for your career? Do you have an EP or full-length album in the works?
I have some music in the works currently and some other visual content as well! I’m hoping to take a step back and get back to creating this fall! The summer was a big push for me, with my debut EP ‘Vol’ I and NBWD. I’m excited to get back to work on some new things for everyone!
What advice would you have for aspiring singers/songwriters?
Reach out. Ask questions. Go to events. Anything you can do to connect with other songwriters is a great step. I’m more of a loner and homebody, but some of the best decisions I’ve made have been to take that risk, send that email, invite someone to coffee. Songwriting should take you out of your comfort zone.
What’s your life like outside of music?
Outside music, my life is pretty boring!! I love to exercise and still teach yoga on the side. I’m usually planning some sort of international trip because I love to travel. I’m a huge Stephen King fan, so you can find me devouring some disturbing novel of his. And I’m still rewatching ‘Friends’ on Netflix!
