Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I live in New Westminster, BC with my hubs and 6-month-old baby girl. I’m a Pisces. I have both a sweet and salty tooth, balance is key.
How did you get your start in music?
I started voice lessons at 17, went to performing arts college at 21 and recorded my first album at 26 – all before I played with a live band – a little backward, but I finally found my way 😉
How would you describe your musical style?
I like to keep a little retro styling in my music. But as far as a genre goes, hard to say – soulful R&B with some blues influences?! But this album has some folk, rock and jazz influences too.
What can you tell us about your latest single, “Buried Alive”?
Buried Alive is so close to my heart. The song represents facing my demons and being a fighter, but the awesome part of music is, if the song is open enough, it can represent so many things. For the music video, we decided to tackle the intense subject of domestic violence – hoping that if even one person sees it and gets some strength and awareness from it, then we made the right choice.
What can audiences expect from your upcoming album, “Bloom/Burn”?
Bloom/Burn is a 2 sided record – kind of a yin/yang idea, that gives a glimpse into my dark and light sides. I basically wrote this whole album as therapy for myself, lol. ‘Worthy’, the next single (out on Feb 14th), is basically written to myself on my weaker days. ‘Bloom’ is a sappy love song about getting better alongside a partner and ‘Burn’ isn’t necessarily personal, but is about holding on too long to something that’s not right. Having my first child during the making of this record certainly shifted my perspective on a lot of things but each song still holds meaning for me, even if it’s different than before she was born.
This album is your 4th studio release. How have you evolved as an artist in that time?
Dang, good question!! Well, not only does each recording experience teach you something technically, it teaches you something about yourself and the people around you!! I have really learned to trust myself and my instincts and follow through with those gut feelings. I think that’s the biggest gift I can give myself. Actually listening to my feelings.
What’s next for your career?
World domination, naturally! But on the way towards that, I’m doing a History Of Motown show in schools, developing an original cabaret-style show about Canada’s Civil Rights Icon, Viola Desmond, called Hey Viola!, and continuing to look for avenues to create positive change through my original music.
What advice would you have for aspiring singers/songwriters?
Find what you believe in and make that a constant thread in your musical expressions. Also, keep at it! This industry is full of highs and lows, just keep chipping away and you’ll find your place, your sound, your groove, whatever! Lastly, surround yourself with good, well-intentioned people who want to genuinely help and celebrate YOU! A great team makes all the difference – and BE KIND to everyone!
What’s your life like outside of music?
Well, I’m tired a lot, haha!! A new baby will do that to ya, but she’s the coolest, most amazing little human I’ve ever met! And otherwise, I’m mostly trying to keep all the plates spinning….I’ll be touring all around BC, AB and ON until June this year, and luckily my lil family trio can come with me for the whole adventure! I also love a good bath and cooking for friends and family!
