Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi! I’m Emma, I’m a singer-songwriter and choir leader living in Bristol, UK originally from Sussex, UK.
How would you describe your musical style?
I’d say it’s folk/pop/acoustic, lots of guitar, and chill feel-good vibes!
You’ve been a vocal and music teacher since graduating in 2013 with a BA Hons in Music. What made this the right time to come out with your own music?
Honestly, it was Covid! This last year has given me and my musician friends time to do a couple of projects, I released a few songs completely independently with my mates and then got approached by a company called Blinding Talent and we’ve gone full steam ahead with my music at a more professional level! Super exciting and I honestly would not have had the confidence or indeed the time if it wasn’t for taking this year out to reflect.
What can you tell us about your latest single, “90s Playlist”?
It’s part of my newly released EP, with two other songs, all reflecting on friendship and unconditional love. 90s Playlist specifically is about one of my best friends, our relationship, and mainly about a fabulous road trip we took when we went on holiday together, listening to 90s music all the way! It’s a nostalgic tune about joy, appreciating your friends, and loving a bit of 90s cheese!
What was on your 90s playlist?
Great question! Lots of cheesy stuff, Spice Girls, B*Witched, S Club 7, and Steps. Artists like Natalie Imbruglia, Alanis Morissette, Gabrielle, The Lighthouse Family, and some Avril Lavigne!!
What’s next for your career?
I’m taking it one step at a time. We are being quite methodical about it with PR and fan growth; building my fans up authentically, getting on some great playlists on Spotify, getting some radio play, and hoping to get some gigs in the Summer. The result we want in the long run is world domination though, of course!
What advice would you have for aspiring singers/songwriters?
Write about the truth. Don’t be afraid of sharing your vulnerabilities, those are usually the most human and relatable things to others. Think about structure and hooks and rhyming couplets and catchy lyrics, but don’t overthink those things either. Do not compare your journey with anyone else’s. And if you don’t like something, then just be honest. Honesty is so so important, with yourself and others.
What’s your life like outside of music?
Currently a little boring haha! But honestly, it’s lovely, I’m trying to allow myself to enjoy this moment of calm. I have my partner and two cats at home with me, I’m reading lots of books, teaching lots of music with my choirs, writing songs and getting excited about the summer, seeing friends and family again and just the future in general! It’s all positive!!
