After over 7 long years, “The Best in the World” CM Punk returned to professional wrestling in his hometown of Chicago on AEW Rampage: The First Dance!

The worst-kept secret in professional wrestling came true on Friday night in the United Center in Chicago as the most-anticipated announcement in All Elite Wrestling history was confirmed to start the second-ever episode of AEW Rampage aptly titled, “The First Dance”. The lights started flashing red and white as the crowd thunderously chanted, “CM PUNK!” and then the familiar guitar riff of Living Colour’s “Cult of Personality” blared over the arena speakers as the crowd erupted into one of the loudest reactions that I’ve ever heard at a professional wrestling show as CM Punk made his way on to the stage and dropped to his knees to take in the atmosphere after 7 plus years away from the ring.

Punk was out there for about 15 minutes of the one-hour show and addressed one of the most important points to the crowd right off the bat. He’s here, “Wednesdays, Fridays, and about 4 Saturdays or Sundays a year” and he’s not going anywhere. This isn’t a one-off appearance, CM Punk is back in a full-time capacity. He also challenged Darby Allin to a match on September 5th at AEW All Out in Chicago live on PPV.

Whether you love CM Punk or think he’s overrated, this was one of the most incredible moments to watch in recent history. The real emotional connection between the fans and Punk is the kind of thing I love about wrestling. Punk has been a guy that for years has been content to be away from professional wrestling and it really looked like he would never step foot in a ring again so I personally was very happy to see him back again. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Punk in AEW!
